Backing Tracks and Vocals in a Recording

Tracking the piano, guitars and other rhythm instruments.

We can delete the primary copy of our song with our new tracks.

I recommend we record a guitar track on a PC recording program. so other tracks that we record will sit inside the groove comfortably. We just follow our plan, play our guitar such a way we include solo, breaks and particular components. After the guitar parts we proceed to recording the piano and melodic instruments and rhythm it will provide a way to guide the drums and guitars we have put down.

Put down our Counter Point Instruments Tracks.

When we put down our program for the track, we know exactly what is played by which instrument and when. It may possibly be saxophones, syn pads, electric guitars, and even organs and accordions. We use our program to record our tracks. There may be possibly be solo instruments that play in parts of our track too. Do those following after we finished the counterpoint instruments.

We must always be conscious that these tracks stand out inside the song, so we must always play them correctly, and in this stage if something isn't proper we try and correct it or fix it. The beauty about it is,as the tracks come together we are able to hear how the feel of the track come about. At this we do just a little mixing to minimize clashes in our tracks.

Recording the Vocals.

Probably the most critical thing naturally is the vocal input, we are able to document a guide vocal course very first. You'll find a few things that we must always be conscious at first, the singer uses singing muscles, if its tired it will show in the track.

The best answer for that is rest the singer, when he or she is well rested, relaxed and of course well practiced in the song we can start recording, and he or she is encouraged to input her/his characteristics in the song.

When the singer is ready to record the track, get her/he to have a practice run to warm the voice up, take your time as an excellent vocal track is really crucial.Do various takes too so we cut and paste the best bits into the final track.

Vocal Harmony

These go last they fit in smoothly with the principal vocal track. We have to watch our phrasing here, pronunciation and timing here, as the back up singer will have to adhere to these to a tee. We ensure the back up singers are also in sync and timing with each other. The aim is to get a good tight vocal tracks. We are able to record the singer together or separately, as long we get probably the most polished results as our aim.

Mixing.

We will base our mixing on the tracks created in the model song. Play the guide song first and mix to that song arrangement. Do not spend a lot of time with this basic mix. We do our stereo panning as well, where we determine where our band members on the stage are, that will determine our stereo image.

Next we adjust our levels of our tracks so that, they sound relatively to each other with the vocals slightly inside the front.

To add reverberation, we add the re-verb effect.

Great Tips On Finding The Finest Microphones For Your Recording

There are many options for aspiring musicians to record their songs. You may consider having someone burn a CD for you or you may go to a professional recording studio session. There is however another option. You may want to consider creating your own studio in your own home. A good option is to purchase a microphone with an USB port. These kinds of microphones connected easily to your laptop and are rather affordable. Getting an USB microphone for your home recording studio can be one of the most cost-effective ways to reproduce professional audio sound.

Condenser mics are probably the most popular mics you will find in a recording studio. These mics can pick up a lot of sound. They also have a very good high-frequency response. You often find these used for vocal microphones, drum microphones, and any instrument that requires ambient sound. You'll find that a lot of condenser microphones are used when recording vocals. Most artists record vocals through a large diaphragm condenser microphone because they are a little less harsh than a dynamic mic, can be smoother sounding and have a broader frequency range.

The typical way to get around these limitations would be to have someone walking around with a wireless mic to field audience questions, or to install a microphone array. An array is essentially a group of vocal microphones working in tandem and strategically placed throughout the room. These mics would then be attached to a computer so that the signals can be collected and assembled into a coherent form. This is a good solution in that both the lecturer and the audience can be recorded, but there's a tradeoff in the complexity of the setup.

The newest array microphone technology addresses these limitations. It's now possible to have a number of closely spaced vocal microphone elements located within the same device. Given the fixed position of each element, digital signal processing (DSP) of each signal source can create "virtual" microphones with complex virtual polar patterns that provide the ability to zero in on, or to reject particular sound sources.

Buy the correct microphone for your audio production and obtain the greatest results possible. Read comparisons on the Cardioid Condenser microphone and then determine if it really is suited to your recording needs.Microphones recording is starting to become part and parcel of us in the world today and the trend continues to develop as more everyone get on to the trend. You can aquire decent promotions on microphones in case you search online. Have a look at this fabulous website to find out more on discounts on the Cardioid condensor microphone besides other microphones recording needs.

Home Recording Equipment: Signal Flow

Signal flow is an important part of any home music studio. A creative thought goes from your mind to electrical signal through various components of your home music studio. how they work together and relate to one another is important. If you wrap your head around signal flow, all the inputs and outputs and how they relate to one another you will be in more creative control of your home music studio. When it comes to troubleshooting this also applies because you can improve how your studio works, adding new equipment and making it easier to transfer your ideas into recordings faster.

Using a simple set up with a computer, audio interface, speakers and microphone I can show you how to understand a home music studio signal flow. the truth is it is about inputs an outputs, that simple. Knowing how inputs and outputs work together in your recording chain will give you the freedom to add and multiply equipment in your home music studio and keep you in control of the creative process

Having a creative idea is just the start, that creative idea leaves as an analogue sound wave, lets say from a guitar and IN a microphone. That signal then comes OUT the end of the microphone cable and IN an audio interface or microphone preamp. At this early stage you will connect your microphone cable to the input of the audio interface. Now that the signal has made its way into the audio interface the signal needs to leave OUT of your speakers so you connect your speakers to the output of the audio interface. Most home recording equipment have multiple inputs and outputs so that you can put equipment in different places in the signal flow .

The first thing an audio interface does is convert analogue sound waves into a digital format so computers can understand. The second function of an audio interface is to again flip the digital audio into analogue so that speakers can playback audio from your computer. The reason why I say to go the audio interface route is because of the sample rates they use to convert analogue to digital and digital to analogue. This sample rate makes a big difference for quality recordings.

The two outputs of an audio interface makes it possible to playback audio from your recording software as well as being able to connect the output of the audio interface to the USB or firewire input of your computer

I realize this is a very simplistic example but if you learn to move around your studio thinking about the IN and OUT concept you can add to your home music studio, set up and experiment connecting the inputs and outputs of all types of gear together and putting you in control.

Easy Steps To Soundproofing Walls In Your Recording Studio

 By Justin Hayes

The benefits of soundproofing walls in your home are many. No matter what your reason, you will certainly appreciate the short time and effort required to accomplish this task. On the other hand, if you are trying to set up a home recording studio, it is an absolute necessity.

The truth is, newer homes are far from soundproofed. So, anyone can overhear others talking, even when they are trying to be discreet. So, it can lead to a slew of other problems. In homes where a growing family lives in, privacy can really be an issue. Parents need some time away where they can talk and spend time together. It's nice for them to know that they don't have to whisper and tiptoe around continuously when their children are asleep, for fear of making them.

Or, the sounds of those walking on upper levels can drive others on the lower levels absolutely mad. Couple that with the fact that many people have taken on home offices and working directly from the house. While it is good on one hand, it can be quite frustrating to concentrate with all the noise that goes on around you. But, you can resolve these issues in a quick and easy manner.

For those who are serious about their home recording studio, optimum sound can only be had in an environment that is soundproofed. There are no ifs ands or buts about it. The fact is, without the room being soundproofed, the playback of music will be poor and lacking in many ways. Additionally, there could be different types of interferences and feedback that will affect your music.

Of course, there are different ways to go about this, but it doesn't have to be extremely expensive. In fact, you can do it economically. In fact, it doesn't even require any serious work or demolition nor many supplies. The answer to this is applying Green Glue on your drywall and then adding another layer of drywall to each side of the wall.

Soundproofing Wall Instalation
Of course, it has to be done on both sides of the wall you were soundproofing. The layer of glue will be easily applied on the wall, the drywall will be adhered to it, and screwed in with proper screws. Then, plaster, drywall tape and such will have to be applied to finish the job and make it look right. It is an effective method because of the glue which is a viscoelastic dampening compound that prohibits sound or noise from penetrating the surface.

As you probably already know, voices and sounds travel. But, This Green Glue avoids this from occurring. Furthermore, it doesn't allow the sound to flank and penetrate the ceiling either. In other words, you won't have to work on floors and ceilings to get the best sound proofing results. The only thing you have to focus on are the actual walls.

The job in question will only require about a day, depending on the size of the room. And, if you have help, you can cut that time even further. Once the soundproofing is completed and the walls are nicely finished, they can be painted, wallpapered or finished in any decor method of your choice.

Getting Ready for Recording Studio Sessions

By Drake Crossland

Stepping into a state-of-the-art recording studio to record with a band is a dream come true for many musicians. But time spent in a recording studio is very expensive and if you show up unprepared you can end up having a costly and difficult experience. Here are a few things to keep in mind to prepare your band for their first trip to the studio.

Prepare Well

To make the most of your money, you don’t want to waste any time in the recording studio. Make sure you know the songs you plan to record inside out. Working out vaguely defined sections of a song or practicing a difficult riff while on the clock will break the bank for most beginner musicians. Have structured practice sessions before the day you plan to record.

Most recording studios start charging at a set time regardless of if you are there or not. Make sure you have everything packed up and ready to go before you are scheduled to arrive. Make sure your instruments are properly tuned and that you have replacement strings, drum sticks, and picks.

What to Expect

The initial setup for recording comes as a surprise to many musicians. You may spend up to four hours of time simply setting up the instruments and playing while the engineer gets the levels right. This can be especially tiresome for getting the right drum sound. Come prepared with samples of guitar and drum sounds that you like so that the engineer can attempt to dial in a similar sound for your recording session.

First, your band will lay down the basic tracks of the song. This usually includes drums, bass and rhythm guitars. Most studios have the ability to record multiple instruments at once. Alternatively, they will let you play along while one instrument is recorded to help keep the place in the song. The entire process goes much smoother if the drummer – who keeps the beat and structure of the song intact – knows every detail of every song.

After the basic rhythm tracks have been recorded, you get to the more exciting part of adding vocals, solos, percussion, samples or other flourishes that fill out the sound of the band. Don’t be surprised if everything takes a lot longer than you expected. Keep things moving by having band members who are not recording practice in another room for the part they will soon perform. This way, everyone is contributing to getting through the process as efficiently and cheaply as possible.

Mistakes to Avoid

The recording studio is not a place to party. Drinking, smoking, and other drugs will only make it harder to perform at your best. Having guests come to the recording studio may serve as a distraction that wastes time and money.

It is also important to know when to call it a day. If you are recording vocals and your voice is shot, it will show. Recording can be an mentally and physically exhausting. If you are too tired to perform your parts well, switch to having another part recorded for the rest of that session.

Success in the recording studio can make or break a band’s career. Make sure to prepare well for your recording session and get your music out there for the world to hear.

Basic Gear for Recording Music

by Victor Epand

There are various gear for recording music. One type of gear operates and affects the ultimate music quality in one way, and the other in a completely different way. To create and compose excellent music with high quality receptive sound, you need to know the details of these various types of gear.

Multitrack recorders can be analog cassette tapes. It can record multiple tracks at a very limited amount of space and number of possible tracks. These are usually the cheapest multitrack recorders. Another is the Digital tape. These are removable digital tapes similar to Zip and Jazz Drives. Then there is the Hard Disk. The multitracker is a form of a hard drive of a computer, which will enable you to store much more work than a tape. Some hard drives can also be upgraded at memory and they are removable.

Another is the Removable Disk. They are removable analog disks that can store more information than cassettes. The disk is usually specific to the manufacturer. The other is the CD, which includes TASCAM CC 22MKIII, a Pro CD recorder with MP3 playback and ROLAND CD 2, an audio recorder that can record sound onto Compact Flash and CD burner.

Microphone is the most important gear for recoding music. The utility value of your microphone depends on two factors, one is the quality and the other is the consistency. Consistency is important, as psychological factors are so great in the perception of sound and because eventual usages of your sound resources may result in arbitrary segments played in juxtaposition.

Studio monitor, also known as the reference monitor, is one of the gear for recording music. There are loudspeakers specially designed for music production of the source material. They generally attempt to paint an accurate audio image of the material with no unnatural emphasis or de emphasis of a particular frequency.

Mixer is another gear for recording music. This is an audio device with one or more lines. It may be an electronic or mechanical instrument. An electronic mixer device mixes signals. It also offers frequency mixers, a telecommunications device used to alter the carrier frequency of a signal. It supports audio mixing console, an electronic device for combining, routing and changing the level of tone or dynamics of two or more audio signals. It can also combine 15 or more video signals. It offers mode mixer, a telecommunications device for handling signals on optical fibers.

Audio interface with in and out configuration, complete with preamps, is one of the perfect gear for music recording. It offers routing of discrete output to a mixer or directly driving it to a surround sound system.

Studio Signal Processor is another gear for music recording. An audio signal processing is the processing of a representation of auditory signals or sound. The representation can be digital or analog. An analog representation is usually electrical and the voltage level represents the air pressure waveform of the sound. Whereas a digital signal representation expresses the pressure waveform as a sequence of symbols, usually binary numbers, which permit digital signal processing. The processing methods and application areas include storage, level compression, data compression, transmission, enhancement for example equalization, filtering, noise cancellation, echo or reverb removal or addition and many more.

The above mentioned gears for recording music are some of the basic necessities that makes a complete recording unit and added to that there are few other accessories such as bag and cases, cables, headphones, and many more.

Promoting Your Music Online: Unsigned bands finding new ways of reaching their public

With the recent rise of groups in the UK such as Arctic Monkeys and Arcade Fire, the internet is proving its worth more and more in the music industry. As traditional formats decline in use, the internet is providing independent musicians with a myriad of possibilities for promoting their music. Indeed, unsigned bands can reach their audiences without needing a record label.

Arcade Fire
Emerging artists used to spend most of their time down at the post office, licking envelopes, sending off cassettes and making further copies of their cassettes. Looking back, it seemed like the dark ages. Today’s indie music scene sees many bands sat at their computer screens, looking for new ways to promote their music. The emergence of several top bands over the last few months thanks to the Internet is proof that the cream will always rise to the top, and using the net, they have every chance of doing so.

Almost all artists have band pages nowadays. In fact, it seems to be the first step on the way to internet recognition. A band page will commonly feature a news page, a separate page for downloading music for free, a photos page, and a contact page. These band pages are, in effect, business cards for musicians. The website receives promotion on various music websites and forums, and the band can create their own image through web branding.

The majority of band pages are very simple. Some carry an internet radio feature on the home page, others allow you to simply download the music in mp3 format, others have lyrics and features on the group, but the intention is always the same: to get people to listen to the group's music.

However, the limitation to a band page is that unless the band promotes itself through other means, i.e. through forums, internet radio stations, flyers at concerts, etc., the website will receive very few visitors.

Internet radio is becoming more and more popular. Sites like www.bluebeamradio.com function largely thanks to emerging artists who wish to promote their music, creating a partnership that brings a community of musicians together. By allowing groups to register for free and to post their mp3s, these radio stations are becoming an essential stop for new bands and independent musicians wishing to create a buzz about themselves.

The idea is catching on. Many listeners want to listen to one particular genre, and are frustrated at mainstream radio offerings. By finding an internet radio station that fits their needs, they are introduced to new bands.

New bands, in return, are being given an audience that has already decided which genre they want to listen to, and internet radio stations like Blue Beam Radio, for example, offer the top-rated bands prizes, such as a concert in New York. The potential to be heard is enormous; it simply requires time in front of the computer!

So while internet radio stations offer streaming music, people will always want to download music for free online. While the music industry is clearly unhappy about free downloads of mp3s or other music formats, listeners will always find ways of sharing their music, it seems. Emerging artists are today taking advantage of that by scouring the internet for sites that offer free music downloads, and literally giving their music away.

The disadvantage to this is that most people will not automatically download online music from a group that they do not know. Almost all sites that offer free music for download operate using a search engine, and users search directly for a group. However, word of mouth on the internet means that when a band is being talked about, people will actually search for that particular band. The best example of this, as mentioned at the top of this article, is the Arctic Monkeys.

Hailing from Sheffield in the UK, the Arctic Monkeys’ success is due entirely to word of mouth on the internet. Their music is pure indie. Raw, punky, and blessed with no shortage of attitude, the buzz around the Arctic Monkeys started on blogs, and started to snowball. They were offering free mp3 downloads via their own website, which was a very basic portal including downloads, photos, future concerts and latest news.

Once the buzz started growing into a shout, their music was available on internet radio stations, music download sites, blogs linked to blogs linked to blogs... very soon, they became the first band to reach number 1 in the UK through internet downloads!

What started off as a music curiosity became a music event. The band were soon appearing on national television, and even on the news, as their album sold more copies on its first day of release than the first releases of Oasis or The Beatles.

What happened in Sheffield can happen anywhere in the world. The internet has brought bands and listeners together at an international level - the rap artist at his home in Seattle can reach the rap fan at his home in Singapore, the independent musician in New York can reach the indie fan in York… but it is also interesting how communities are forming at a local level.

The internet is providing emerging artists with opportunities to create a buzz around their latest concerts, generating an audience that would previously have taken a great deal of legwork to gather. Through mailing lists, online flyers, blog and forum entries, a music event can be publicised many ways. The more innovative a group becomes, the more chance it has of reaching its public.

Local music forums have popped up all around the world. Indie bands will always look for a solid local fan base, and it is thanks to the internet forum that they have found this. Using their forum post signature to promote their website, these bands post flyers, concert information and more, and even share information about how to find concerts, where to buy equipment, and recording techniques. When looking for a local community of listeners, indie bands can easily find local communities of bands who are doing the same thing.

While seemingly these bands rarely get the chance to meet each other unless they are playing a gig together, the internet gives them the opportunity to discuss and promote 24 hours a day.

In truth, the internet is simply offering an extension to the old “local scene” that existed before it. Indie music has grown over the last few years largely because of the adaptability of independent musicians to the internet, and because of their community spirit. While prior to the internet, a local music scene would have been limited to a handful of bands, today it is much easier for a group to break onto the local music scene, as long as they have a strong website, a strong image, and of course, good music.

And in the end, the essential truths of the music industry will always bear out. If you don’t have the music, you won’t make the grade. Listeners are canny people, and they will always filter out the good bands from the average bands, regardless of how good the website is, or how persistent the promotion is. However, as indie music flourishes, so do the best bands, and if they are on the right internet radio stations, if they can create the right buzz around themselves, and if they can reach their audience, emerging artists today have every chance not just of increasing their audiences, but of getting a contract with a record label.
